Leed's Arndale Centre continues growing success
Topwell Estates has taken the Arndale Centre in Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire from strength to strength since its purchase in November 2006. Over the last 18 months the landlord, advised by Savills, has attracted numerous national retailers including Costa Coffee, O2 and Ladbrokes, which have helped to augment its already strong tenant mix.
As a result of its growing success, Topwell Estates has sought to enhance the 63,373 sq ft (5,887 sq m) centre, which currently incorporates a Somerfield supermarket, 22 retail units, a seven-floor office block totalling 50,679 sq ft (4,708 sq m) and a 215-space car park. The landlord has recently been granted planning consent for a £2.2 million refurbishment of the shopping centre and the creation of an additional 12,000 sq ft (1,115 sq m) of office accommodation.
Steve Henderson, associate director of Savills, comments: "These are exciting times for the Arndale Centre. The refurbishment will help to strengthen the scheme, which already hosts a variety of national and independent retailers, and augment its position as a prime retail destination."
The comprehensive refurbishment will entail the recladding of the centre's façade and a new canopy, as well as the reconfiguration and expansion of existing stores in order to maximise space and generate opportunities for new retailers. It will also include improvements to the paving, streetscape and furniture, car parking and lighting.
