MacRoberts to relocate to Glasgow's financial district

MacRoberts LLP, one of Scotland's leading law firms, is to become the first tenant at Wilson Bowden's Capella Building at Atlantic Quay in the heart of Glasgow's International Financial Services District (IFSD).

In a major boost for the city's commercial property sector and the IFSD, the commercial law firm will relocate to Capella from its existing Glasgow premises at 152 Bath Street, by the end of 2009 and will occupy four floors, covering more than 33,500 square feet.

At 113,122 sq ft (10,510 sq m) the 11-storey, £35 million Capella development is set for completion in August this year and will be the tallest office building on the Broomielaw. In addition to 108,000 square feet of prime office space, the building's ground floor will house 3,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space.

Capella will form the centrepiece of Atlantic Quay and the retail and leisure development will further expand the services available on the waterfront, adding to the growing number of restaurants, hotels and shops on offer in the district. More than 12,000 people now work in the Broomielaw area.

Michael Murphy, Managing Partner of MacRoberts LLP said: "MacRoberts have made a very bold decision to secure what we consider to be the best office location in Glasgow for our business.

"The selection of Capella and the timing of the move is a clear statement of our ambition and our confidence in the future of MacRoberts and of our desire to provide our staff with modern, attractive and comfortable office accommodation that enhances the efficiency of the way we work together, for the ultimate benefit of our clients."

Jim Fitzsimons, chief executive of the Capella Group which is managing the development on behalf of Wilson Bowden, said: "The commercial property sector, like the rest of the economy, is operating in a challenging environment which is why this announcement is extremely encouraging, both for the sector and for Glasgow. It has always been our goal to transform Atlantic Quay into a vibrant business quarter and by providing high-quality business space, we've been able to attract high-calibre tenants such as MacRoberts.

"The firm's decision to relocate to Capella is clearly a strong vote of confidence for what we, and the city, are trying to achieve in providing state-of-the-art business premises. MacRoberts will now join other blue-chip organisations such as BT, Direct Line, Scottish Power and Lloyds TSB, who have all chosen to base themselves in Atlantic Quay and the wider IFSD, which is now seen as an attractive location in which to live and work."

Councillor George Ryan, Executive Member for Development and Regeneration at Glasgow City Council, added: "The great news that such an established firm are moving into this new building in the heart of Glasgow's business quarter is another vote of confidence in Glasgow and the wider International Financial Services District Area. Such a move reinforces the message that significant development continues in Glasgow and that the city is very much open for business."

The Capella development also includes the creation of a new public square and further enhancement of the public realm works which continued the 'constellation' theme that has been used throughout the streetscape in the Atlantic Quay area. Capella is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga and the eleventh brightest star in the sky.
