£2m refurbishment of The St Nicholas Centre in Aberdeen complete
A £2million refurbishment project which has transformed the ambience of one of Aberdeen's main shopping destinations, the St Nicholas Centre, is now complete.
The major facelift, which started last summer, includes stunning lightboxes and a curved timber ceiling, as well as light modern flooring and new entrance doors.
Eye-catching signage displaying the new branding for the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres has also been placed at The St Nicholas Square and Schoolhill entrances as part of the redevelopment.
The St Nicholas Centre opened in October 1985 and this is the first time it has undergone any redevelopment work.
Frank Sutherland, Manager of the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres, says the facelift has 'breathed new life into the Centre'.
"The end result of this redevelopment is better than we had anticipated. It completely transforms the Centre, giving it a really modern and contemporary feel.
"Thanks to the clever architectural design of the project, the Centre now looks so much bigger and it appears to be a far more open space.
"Both our Centres are undergoing periods of change with the opening of new shops. We are working towards strengthening our fashion focus and this refurbishment will showcase any new stores, along with our existing retailers."
He has thanked both retailers and shoppers for their patience while the work was underway.
"The contractors worked really hard to cause as little disruption and this was reflected in the very low level of complaints we had about the redevelopment."
PMP Architecture were responsible for the design. Director Rory Kellett said the aim of the redevelopment was to create a 'fresh, inviting' space which would encourage shoppers to increase their dwell time in the Centre.
"The external lightboxes will entice shoppers into the new look St Nicholas and the light weight doors aim to ease the transition from the external environment to the internal space," he said.
"We have achieved a cool, understated minimalist chic through the ribbon of light and the light boxes. These are complemented by the contemporary flooring which has been created with different textured sand coloured tiles.
"We are exceptionally pleased with the new look of the Centre. The clean lines and restricted palette give an overall contemporary feel and sense of design quality. Ultimately, we wanted to create a calm and relaxing retail experience for visitors to the St Nicholas Centre."
